Joey has been a member of NewCov CrossFit since September 2016. Coach Raquel Theodosopoulos stated that "He is always so excited & self confident in his abilities. He never settles. He is extremely dedicated & highly coachable. He’s truly willing to step out of his comfort zone if it means towards success." Coach Megan McDonald said that "Joey is so athletic and pushes it to the max all the time!" 1. What made you give CrossFit a try?
I first tried CrossFit over the summer before my senior year when I was swimming in college. Over the break we needed to find a place to continue our strength training and CrossFit gyms were the only place I could find barbell equipment. I ended up only doing the scheduled programing and really enjoyed it. Then about a year after I finished my collegiate career I decided to give it another try because I really missed being pushed in workout and competing. 2. What did you think after your first WOD? The first WOD I ever did was actually Fran. Fortunately for me the workout was all body weight and movements I was already good at. It was really fun because I got to experience the community within CrossFit.
3. What has been your favorite CrossFit memory so far? I have a lot of great memories, such as getting my first muscle up or when I hit a PR for the clean in last years open. However, I think my best memory was in this years 19.5 open workout. That was the first time since I was a swimmer that I felt like I pushed myself to my absolute max.
4. What is your favorite movement? My favorite movements are definitely ring muscle ups and hand stand walks. Both took me a long time to learn but once I figured them out I couldn’t stop doing them. 5. What is your least favorite movement? My least favorite movements are anything that requires a lot of pure strength. So I would have to say deadlifts and the air bike. 6. Do you follow any specific diet? No not really. Although I feel like I will eventually start easing in to one in the near future. 7. What has been the biggest improvement you've seen from your training? One of my favorite things about CrossFit is that you always see improvements. Recently I just finished Raquel’s Set Fire Barbell Club. I was able to see a ton of improvements in my strength and technique. Thanks Raquel! 8. What advice do you have for beginners? Don’t be intimidated by workouts or fellow CrossFitters. And to also be consistent. No matter what the workout is there is always a modified version that will challenge you and make you better. Everyone in the gym is really supportive and will help make your experience way better. 9. What are your goals for the future? I have a few goals in the near future. I would like to hit 200# for my snatch and 250# for my clean & jerk. On top of that I would like to out perform my national placement in the open from this year. 10. Any shout outs...Go for it! Thanks to all the coaches for being there everyday and creating a fun environment. Raquel for helping me get strong and improving my technique. Johnny for challenging me in workouts and teaching me how to do gymnastic stuff. Tony for always competing with me and keeping workouts fun. My co-workers Kirtley and Steven for joining the gym with me and giving me people to talk about CrossFit with. I know I am missing a lot of other people but I definitely appreciate everyone at NewCov. Congrats Joey! We are so proud to have you at NewCov CrossFit!
